Rio Summer School on PDE's

A Rio Summer School on PDE's acontecerá nos dias 9 a 13 de março de 2020 no Instituto de Matemática da UFRJ. As Equações Diferenciais Parciais têm sido um campo de pesquisa muito ativo no Brasil, levando a muitas contribuições importantes em nível internacional. Assim, a escola surge como um esforço conjunto da PUC-Rio, UFF e UFRJ para reunir os principais pesquisadores que trabalham no campo, com sede no Brasil e no exterior. Estudantes, bolsistas de pós-doutorado e jovens pesquisadores que trabalham no campo também são convidaos a participar, com o objetivo de fortalecer a colaboração em pesquisa e discutir o progresso recente no campo dinâmico e em rápido crescimento dos PDEs.

Minicursos:

- Qualitative properties of solutions of semilinear elliptic equations by Morse index,
Filomena Pacella (Sapienza University of Rome, Itália)

In the course we will describe the Morse theory in the framework of semilinear elliptic equations both in the case of positive and sign changing solutions. The main purpose is to show how to deduce qualitative properties of the solutions by the knowledge or estimates of their Morse index.
Thus we will show on one side how to compute or estimate the Morse index and on the other side how to use this information in some specific problem to get symmetry, multiplicity or uniqueness of solutions.

- Obstacle-type free boundary problems,
Andreas Minne (KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Suécia)

This course will be an introduction to the world of free boundary problems. First we are going to look at a couple of famous examples, and then start
focusing our attention on the obstacle problem and related problems. We will discuss methods how to overcome regularity issues, and if time allows we will also cover some recent results.
